RAINBOW GEMS

Armadillo with various pride flags around it In the fall of 2021 we started a new club for 4th and 5th grade LGBTQ+ and ally students, the Rainbow Gems club! Our Rainbow Gems are a dedicated group of elementary age students who care about promoting kindness and diversity and supporting LGBTQ+ students of all ages. They meet on Tuesdays at lunch and are supported by advisers Jen Salinas-Holz and 4th grade teacher Ms. Givens.

HARVEY MILK DAY - MAY 22

Rainbow Flag Harvey Milk Day graphic
Harvey Milk was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the US, inspired the rainbow flag, and was assassinated along with the mayor of San Francisco in 1978. Harvey Milk Day was designated as a day of special significance in California public schools by the governor in 2009, to recognize his important contributions as a civil rights hero.

WINNER OF THE ORGANIZATIONAL ALLY TO QUEER YOUTH AWARD AT THE 2017 QUEER YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS!

WINNER OF THE ORGANIZATIONAL ALLY TO QUEER YOUTH AWARD AT THE 2017 QUEER YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS!

The Alianza QSA (formerly GSA) won the Organization Ally to Queer Youth award for our social justice activism. During the 2016-2017 school year, our students were the first middle school group to present a workshop (on poster making) at the Queer/Trans/Allied youth summit conference. Our students make posters to help educate our school community and make it safer for LGBTQ students and their allies!
The Alianza QSA club was started in 2015 is now advised by Alianza staff member and parent Jen Salinas-Holz, and middle school science teacher Chivonne Wilde.

Our club meets during middle school lunch and is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who identify as LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning) or allies. Through discussion, social justice activism and poster making, we work to promote a safer, more welcoming school environment for LGBTQ students, staff and families.
