USERŐS GUIDE TO THE BENCHMARK PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (BPI), VERSION 2003

The documents in this folder are the revised BPI Student Profiles for grades 6-8 and 9-12 used by Pajaro Valley Unified S. D. to monitor progress of English Learners as they move through programs and schools in the district. In the past, we used one BPI for grades 6-12. Now we have a 6-8 version and the 9- 12 version. The new versions were revised using the ELD/ELA essential standards; thus, they reflect the critical skills students need to improve their language proficiency and perform well on high stakes tests. These revised versions should make it easier to evaluate growth and ensure that students are learning the critical skills necessary for academic and personal success in and beyond high school.

There are three versions in the folder:

  1. Version I is the BPI Student Profile. Each EL has a profile on which the classroom teacher records dates when the student has mastered the skill. Mastery is presumed when the student demonstrates consistent performance without the help of the teacher. The profile is used to plan instruction and is given to the next teacher when the child moves on to a new grade or site. Students are expected to demonstrate mastery of all skills at a proficiency level in a given domain before they can receive the corresponding score for that proficiency level. For example, a teacher gives a student a rating of 2 if he/she has completed all the indicators of the beginning and early intermediate levels in the given domain.

The BPI is meant to be a guide to instruction, but teachers should use it to document student progress as well. Tests, portfolio products, and classroom observations can be used to keep a record of students' advancement and serve as one of multiple measures of evaluating progress. Student writing samples, reading test scores, projects and other evidence can be very useful to receiving teachers and schools for placement and instructional purposes.

  1. Version 2 BPI Profile with Essential Standard and CELDT Cross-reference. Teachers can use this to assure themselves that they are teaching to the standards and covering important items tested on the CELDT. To the left of the BPI indicators (6-8 only) are the corresponding ELD/ELA essential standards strand reference numbers. The abbreviations stand for the standard strands:

The asterisk indicates items addressed on the CELDT test.

The 9-12 BPI with Essential Standards and CELDT Cross-Reference has the corresponding ELD/ELA standards number, not the strands.

See the ELDIELA Essential Standards Alignment document for more standards and for more detail, if needed.

  1. Version 3 is the BPI Frofile with Course Numbers in the blanks, indicating in which course the indicator should be taught. Review and reteaching may be needed in higher levels, but in order to achieve a systematic and cohesive approach, we should try to cover all of the indicators and their relevant language skills without any gaps. This ensures that students do not miss essential pieces of instruction critical for future learning. Sites that have ELD 1, 2, and 3 courses can use this as a guide to planning sections. Newcomer courses have the same goals as ELD I but may take a different approach and may have a different timeline for completion.
