3.1:  Identify and analyze the characteristics of poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction and explain the appropriateness of the literary forms chosen by the author for a specific purpose.

3.2:  Identify the main problem or conflict and explain how it is resolved.

3.3:  Contrast actions and motives of characters showing effect on plot/theme.

3.4:  Understand that theme is meaning or moral of the selection.

3.5:  Describe function and effect of literary devices such as imagery and metaphor.

 

 

ELD Standards                             Grade 5 Ð Beginning Level

READING:  Comprehension,

Narrative

(3.1) Orally distinguish between fiction and non-fiction using one- or two-word responses or phrases. Use pictures, lists, charts,  and tables to identify the characteristics of fairy tales, folktales, myths, and legends.

(3.2) RECOMMENDED:  Sequence the events of a selection.

(3.3) Orally identify different characters and settings in simple literary texts using words or phrases.

(3.4) Listen to a story and respond orally by answering factual comprehension questions using one- or two-word responses.

(3.5) RECOMMENDED:  Match idioms with pictorial representations of their meaning.

 

Grade 5 Ð Early Intermediate Level

 

READING:  Comprehension,

Narrative

(3.1) Orally distinguish among poetry, drama, and short stories using simple sentences.

(3.2) Orally identify the main events of the plot using simple sentences. Orally describe the setting of a piece of literature using simple sentences.

(3.3) Orally describe what a character is like by what he/she does in a selection, using simple sentences.

(3.4) Orally respond to brief literary stories by answering factual comprehension questions, using simple sentences.

(3.5) RECOMMENDED:  Find idioms in literature read in class.

Grade 5 Ð Intermediate Level

 

READING:  Comprehension,

Narrative

(3.1) RECOMMENDED:  Orally distinguish among poetry, drama, and short stories using complex sentences.

(3.2) RECOMMENDED:  Read and identify the conflict in a story.

(3.3) RECOMMENDED:  Using complex sentences describe what characters are like by what they and what other characters say about them.

(3.4) Apply knowledge of language to derive meaning/comprehension from literary texts.

(3.5) RECOMMENDED:  Find examples of similes and metaphors in text.

 


Grade 5 Ð Early Advanced Level

 

READING:  Comprehension,

Narrative

(3.1) RECOMMENDED:  Prepare a formal oral presentation distinguishing among poetry, drama, and short stories.

(3.2) Read and orally identify the main problem of a plot and how it is resolved in a selection.

(3.3) Identify the motives of characters in a work of fiction.

(3.4) Recognize and describe themes stated directly in a text.

(3.5) Identify and describe figurative language (e.g., similes, metaphors, and personification). 

Distinguish between literary connotations and symbols from culture to culture. 

 

Grade 5 Ð Advanced Level
