Conventions

1.1:  Use complete/correct declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory sentences.

1.2:  Identify correct usage: verb tense, pronoun case, and subject-verb agreement.

1.3:  Identify and use the past, present, and future verb tenses of words.

1.5:  Punctuate dates, city, and state, and items in a series.

1.6:  Commas in dates, locations, items in a series, apostrophes with contractions.

1.7:  Capitalize geographical names, holidays, historical periods, and special events.

1.8:  Spell one-syllable words with blends and contractions, compound words and homophones.

1.9:  Arrange words in alphabetical order.

 

 

ELD Standards                             Grade 3 Ð Beginning Level

 

WRITING:

(1.1) RECOMMENDED:  Copy sentences form guided writing.

(1.2) RECOMMENDED:  Identify correct pronoun, e.g., he, she, it.

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Understand present tense in learned phrases with be, have, like, want, need; present progressive; learned imperative statements, e.g., sit down, line up, point to.  

With guidance, fill in cloze or sentence frame with correct verb.

(1.5 & 1.6) RECOMMENDED:  Use commas in dates.

(1.7) RECOMMENDED:  Use capital letters when writing own name and at the beginning of sentences.

(1.8) RECOMMENDED:  Copy cvc words.

(1.9) RECOMMENDED:  Arrange alphabet cards in order.

 

 

Grade 3 Ð Early Intermediate Level

 

 

WRITING:

(1.1) RECOMMENDED:  Write simple sentences.

(1.2) RECOMMENDED:  Choose correct form of verb, present and present progressive.

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Use present, present progressive and simple past tenses in affirmative and negative questions.

(1.5 & 1.6) RECOMMENDED:  Use commas between city and state and apostrophe for heÕs, sheÕs, itÕs and IÕm.

(1.7) Use capital letters to begin sentences and proper nouns.

(1.8) RECOMMENDED:  Spell cvc words including blends and digraphs.

(1.9) RECOMMENDED:  Spell cvc words including blends and digraphs.

 


Grade 3 Ð Intermediate Level

 

WRITING:

Conventions

(1.1) Use standard word order but may have some inconsistent grammatical forms (e.g. subject/verb agreement).

(1.2) RECOMMENDED:  Distinguish subject and object pronouns.

Identify subjects and verb in sentences.

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Use regular/irregular past tense in affirmative and negative statements and questions; future tense, present perfect; some conditional common; phrasal verbs (turn off).

(1.5 & 1.6) RECOMMENDED:  Use commas in a series and apostrophes to show possession and in contractions, e.g., youÕve vs. your, theyÕre vs. there.

(1.8) RECOMMENDED:  Spell contractions and compound words.

(1.9) RECOMMENDED:  Arrange words by first two letters.

 

Grade 3 Ð Early Advanced Level

 

WRITING:

(1.1) Use standard word order but may have some inconsistent grammatical forms, including inflections.

(1.2) RECOMMENDED:  Identify correct usage of all pronouns and subject-verb agreement.

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Use complex phrasal verbs (e.g., deprived of); past perfect tense; conditional (would, should, could); perfect conditional (e.g., I would haveÉ If).

(1.5 & 1.6) RECOMMENDED:  Edit work for commonly confused contractions e.g., youÕve vs. your, theyÕre vs. there.

(1.7) ELA 1.7

(1.8) RECOMMENDED:  Spell homophones correctly.

(1.9) RECOMMENDED: Arrange words by first three letters.

 

Grade 3 Ð Advanced Level

 

WRITING:

(1.1) Use complete sentences and correct word order. 

Use correct parts of speech, including correct subject/verb agreement.

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Use progressive & future perfect (e.g., She has been working, she will have been workingÉ); passive voice (e.g., It was written byÉ).
