3.4:  Determine theme or authorÕs message.

3.6:  Identify the speaker or narrator.

READING: Comprehension, Narrative Texts

(3.1) Orally distinguish between fiction and non-fiction using one- or two-word responses or phrases.

Use pictures, lists, charts, and tables to identify the characteristics of fairy tales, folktales, myths, and legends.

(3.2) RECOMMENDED:  Sequence the main events, represented graphically, of a simple story.

(3.3) Orally identify different characters and settings in simple literary texts using words or phrases.

(3.4) Listen to a story and respond orally by answering factual comprehension questions using one- or two-word responses.

(3.6) RECOMMENDED:  Identify the main characters of a story when presented graphically.

 

Grade 3 Ð Early Intermediate Level

READING: Comprehension, Narrative Texts

(3.1) Orally distinguish among poetry, drama, and short stories using simple sentences.

(3.2) Orally identify the main events of the plot using simple sentences.

Orally describe the setting of a piece of literature using simple sentences.

(3.3) Orally describe what a character is like by what he/she does in a selection, using simple sentences.

(3.4) Orally respond to brief literary stories by answering factual comprehension questions, using simple sentences.

(3.6) RECOMMENDED:  Name the main characters of a story when presented graphically.

 

 


Grade 3 Ð Intermediate Level

 

READING: Comprehension, Narrative Texts

(Literary Response & Analysis)

 

(3.1) RECOMMENDED:  Orally distinguish among poetry, drama, and short stories using some compound and complex sentences.

(3.2) Use expanded vocabulary and descriptive words and paraphrasing for oral and written responses to text.

(3.3) RECOMMENDED:  Rate the characteristics of characters in a story and contrast their personalities or manner of communicating with each other.

(3.4) Apply knowledge of language to drive meaning/comprehension from literary texts.

(3.6) RECOMMENDED:  Identify the main characters of the story and quotations from their speech in the story.

 

Grade 3 Ð Early Advanced Level

READING: Comprehension, Narrative Texts

(Literary Response & Analysis)

 

(3.1) RECOMMENDED:  State specific characteristics of poetry, drama, and short stories.

(3.2) Read and orally identify the main problem of a plot and how it is resolved in a selection.

(3.3) Identify the motives of characters in a work of fiction.

(3.4) Recognize and describe themes stated directly in a text.

(3.6) Read and orally identify the speaker or narrator in a selection, using simple sentences.

Recognize the difference between first and third person in a literary text.

 

Grade 3 Ð Advanced Level
