Listening & Speaking

1.1:  Retell, paraphrase, and explain what a speaker has said. 

1.3:  Respond to questions with appropriate elaboration.

1.5:  Organize ideas chronologically or around major points of information.

1.6:  Provide a beginning, middle and end, including details that develop a central idea.

1.9:  Read aloud with fluency, rhythm, and pace.

1.11:  Distinguish between a speakerÕs opinions and verifiable facts.

 

 

ELD Standards                    Grade 3 Ð Beginning Level

Listening & Speaking

(1.1) RECOMMENDED:  Participate in short conversations retelling familiar stories by using appropriate gestures, expressions, and illustrative objects.

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Be able to understand and answer with gestures and/or one or two words to classroom questions (e.g., Where is your pencil?) and routine social questions (e.g., How are you?).

(1.5 & 1.6) RECOMMENDED:  Sequence a known story or event using pictures or other objects.

Categorize the elements pertaining to a major topic using illustrative objects (i.e., put all the bears, rats, rodents, etc. in the mammal category).

(1.9) Begin to speak with few words or sentences, using some English phonemes and rudimentary English grammatical forms.

RECOMMENDED:  Participate in choral reading of poems and chants.

(1.11) RECOMMENDED:  Recognize words that signal opinion/desire ÒI wantÓ or ÒI thinkÓ.

 

Grade 3 Ð Early Intermediate Level

 

Listening & Speaking

 

(1.1) Orally identify the main points of simple conversation and stories that are read aloud using phrases or simple sentences.

RECOMMENDED:  Use of verb tense to include past progressive & present tense.

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Understand and respond to simple instructional questions (WhatÕs happening here? HeÕs running in the woods.).

(1.5 & 1.6) RECOMMENDED:  Sequence a story or event using short phrases and sentences.

Categorize information pertaining to a major topic using single phrases and sentences.

(1.9) Begin to be understood when speaking, but may have some inconsistent use of standard English grammatical forms and sounds (e.g., plurals, simple past tense, pronouns he/she).

RECOMMENDED:  Recite known poems Jazz chants (reading off paper or chart).

(1.11) RECOMMENDED:  Recognize words that signal opinion, e.g., ÒI think thatÉ or My idea isÉÓ.

 


Grade 3 Ð Intermediate Level

 

Listening & Speaking

 

 (1.1) Retell stories and talk about school-related activities using expanded vocabulary, descriptive words, and paraphrasing.

RECOMMENDED:  Include character setting, and plot summary in retell. Use of verb-tense to include correct regular/irregular past tense.

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Understand and respond to instructional questions using standard grammatical forms: past tense, conditional (e.g., If I wereÉ I would) and future tense.

(1.5 & 1.6) RECOMMENDED:  Recount a story or event in chronological order using mostly correct sentences and some transitions (e.g., first, then, orally). Present a central idea and supporting details.

(1.9) Be understood when speaking, using consistent standard English grammatical forms and sounds; however, some rules may not be in evidence (e.g., third person singular, male and female pronouns).

RECOMMENDED:  Read aloud own writing, known poems, and text with fluency.

(1.11) RECOMMENDED:  Recognize words that signal opinion: If I wereÉ I wouldÉ He shouldÉ He couldÉ(i.e., conditional, understand how tone affects meaning).

 

Grade 3 Ð Early Advanced Level

 

Listening & Speaking

 

(1.1) Retell stories in greater detail including characters, setting, plot, summary, and analysis.

RECOMMENDED:  Retell should have correct use of all past tense verbs and use of conditional.

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Respond to instructional questions with restated information, opinions or persuasive arguments needed.

Demonstrate ability to use other conditional forms (If X had happened, Y would haveÉ).

(1.5 & 1.6) RECOMMENDED:  Recount story or event in chronological order using correct grammar and a variety of sentences, transitions and precise vocabulary.

Orally present a central idea and include the supporting details or evidence to elaborate on it.

(1.9) Be understood when speaking, using consistent standard English grammatical forms and sounds; intonation, pitch and modulation, but may have random errors.

RECOMMENDED:  Read aloud unfamiliar texts with rhythm, fluency, and pace.

(1.11) RECOMMENDED:  Be able to identify factual statements.
