1.1: Select a focus (or topic) when writing.

1.2: Use descriptive words when writing.

Penmanship:

1.3: Print legibly and space letters, words, and sentences appropriately.

 

 

 

ELD Standards                                      Grade 1 - Beginning Level

WRITING:  Strategies

Organization and Focus:

(1.1) Write a few words or phrases about an event or character from a story read by the teacher.

(1.2) RECOMMENDED:  Use adjective phrases (e.g., big boy, small cat).

Penmanship:

(1.3) Copy the English alphabet legibly.

 

 

Grade 1 Ð Early Intermediate Level

WRITING:  Strategies

 

Organization and Focus:

(1.1) Write simple sentences about events or characters from familiar stories read by the teacher.

(1.2) RECOMMENDED:  Use at least one adjective in describing characters in stories, features in social studies and science.

Penmanship:

(1.3) RECOMMENDED: Write known words with correct formation of letters.

 

 

Grade 1 Ð Intermediate Level

WRITING:  Strategies

 

Organization and Focus:

(1.1) Write short narrative stories that include the elements of setting and character.

(1.2) RECOMMENDED:  Use two adjectives in describing characters in stories, features in social studies and science.

Penmanship:

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Use spaces between words in phrases and simple sentences.

 

 

Grade 1 Ð Early Advanced Level

 

WRITING:  Strategies

 

Organization and Focus:

(1.1) Write short narratives that include elements of setting, character, and events.

(1.2) RECOMMENDED:  Use adjectives and adverbs in describing characters in stories, features in social studies and science.

Penmanship:

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Use correct spacing between words in sentences, and between sentences.

 

Grade 1 Ð Advanced Level

WRITING:  Strategies

Organization and Focus:

(1.1) Write short narratives that describe the setting, character, objects, and events.

(1.2) RECOMMENDED:  Use description in both narrative and expository writing.

Penmanship:

(1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Use capitals at the beginning of sentences, end punctuation (periods and question marks) correctly.
