WRITING:  Conventions

 

1.1:  Write and speak in complete sentences.

1.2 & 1.3:  Identify singular/plural nouns, contractions, and possessive pronouns.

1.5:  Use a period, exclamation point, or question mark appropriately.

1.7:  Capitalize the first word in a sentence, names of people, I.

1.8:  Spell 3-letter short vowel words and first 15 sight words correctly.

 

 

ELD Standards                             Grade 1- Beginning Level

WRITING:  Conventions

(1.1) Recommended:  Write words and phrases from proficiency level speech.

(1.2, 1.3) Recommended:  Write singular and plural nouns from proficiency level.

(1.5) Use a period or question mark at the end of a sentence.

(1.7) Use capital letters to begin sentences and proper nouns.

(1.8) Recommended:  Spell 2-letter short vowel words and first 5 sight words correctly.

 

Grade 1 Š Early Intermediate Level

WRITING:  Conventions

 

(1.1) RECOMMENDED:  Use standard word order in short phrases.

(1.2, 1.3)  Recommended:  Write singular and plural nouns as well as contractions (e.g., IÕm, heÕs, sheÕs, weÕre, itÕs, thereÕs, thatÕs) and subject and object pronouns.

(1.5, 1.7) Edit writing for some conventions (e.g., capital letters and periods and make some corrections.

(1.8) Spell short vowel (cvc) and first 8 sight words correctly.

 

Grade 1 Š Intermediate Level

WRITING:  Conventions

 

(1.1) Use standard word order but may have some inconsistent grammatical forms (e.g., subject/verb without inflections).

(1.2, 1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Write sentences using possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns correctly.

(1.5, 1.7) Recommended:  Edit writing for more conventions (e.g., correct use of end punctuation, capital letters for proper nouns).

(1.8) Spell short vowel and first 10 (with blends and diagrams) sight words correctly.

 

Grade 1 Š Early Advanced Level

 

WRITING:  Conventions

 

(1.1) Use standard word order buy may have some inconsistent grammatical forms (e.g., subject/verb agreement).

(1.2, 1.3) RECOMMENDED:  Write sentences using reflexive pronouns.

(1.5, 1.7, 1.8) Produce independent writing that may include some inconsistent use of capitalization, periods, and correct spelling.

 

Grade 1 Š Advanced Level

 

WRITING:  Conventions

 

(1.1) Use complete sentences and correct word order.

(1.2, 1.3) Use correct parts of speech, including correct subject/verb agreement.

RECOMMENDED:  Write singular and plural at proficiency level.

(1.5) Produce writing that demonstrates a command of the conventions of standard English.

(1.7) Edit writing for punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.

(1.8) Spell 3- and 4-letter short vowel words and sight words correctly.
