READING:  Comprehension

 

 

(2.1) Identify the basic sequences of events in stories read to them, using key words or pictures.

(2.2) Respond orally to stories read to them, using physical actions and other means of non-verbal communication (e.g., matching objects, pointing to an answer, drawing pictures). 

Respond orally to stories read to them by answering questions using one- or two-word responses.

(2.3) Understand and follow simple one-step directions for classroom or work-related activities.

(2.5) RECOMMENDED:  Demonstrate or choose pictorial representation of what will happen next in story.

(2.6) Draw pictures from studentÕs own experience related to a story or topic (e.g., community in social studies).

(2.7) RECOMMENDED:  Identify central ideas of simple text.

 

Grade 1 Ð Early Intermediate Level

 

READING:  Comprehension

 

(2.1) RECOMMENDED:  Identify the basic sequences of events in stories read to them using simple phrases.

(2.2) Respond orally to simple stories read to them by answering factual comprehension questions using phrases or simple sentences.

(2.3) Understand and follow simple two-step directions of classroom or work-related activities.

(2.5) Use the content of a story read aloud to draw logical inferences.

(2.6) Draw and label pictures related to a story topic or own experience.

(2.7) RECOMMENDED:  Orally identify central ideas or characters of text read to them.

 


Grade 1 Ð Intermediate Level

 

READING:  Comprehension

 

 

(2.1) RECOMMENDED:  Orally identify the basic sequence of text read using complete sentences, with some errors.

(2.2) Read and use simple sentences to orally respond to stories by answering factual comprehension questions.

(2.3) Understand and follow some multi-step directions for classroom-related activities.

RECOMMENDED:  Begin to follow directions related to classroom activities written in short phrases.

(2.5) RECOMMENDED:  Read and use the content of stories read aloud to draw inferences about the stories.

(2.6) Write captions of words or phrases for drawings related to a story.

(2.7) RECOMMENDED:  Identify key words in text students reads.

 

Grade 1 Ð Early Advanced Level

 

READING:  Comprehension

 

(2.1) RECOMMENDED:  Orally identify the basic sequence of simple text read by them using more complex sentences, with few errors.

(2.2) Read and orally respond to stories and texts from content areas by restating facts and details to clarify ideas.

(2.3) RECOMMENDED:  Follow directions written in short sentences related to classroom activities.

(2.5) Read and use detailed sentences to orally identify the main idea and use the idea to draw inferences about text.

(2.6) RECOMMENDED:  Relate story or text to personal experience in complete sentences with some specific examples.

(2.7) RECOMMENDED:  Complete graphic organizer for text read (e.g., place key words on spider web or narrative outline).

 

Grade 1 Ð Advanced Level

 

READING:  Comprehension

(2.1) RECOMMENDED:  Orally identify the basic sequence of grade-level text read by them.

(2.2) ELA 2.2

(2.3) RECOMMENDED:  Follow directions written in complex sentences related to classroom activities.

(2.5) ELA 2.5

(2.6) RECOMMENDED:  Contrast main idea of story or text to personal experience in complete sentences with details and examples.

(2.7) Prepare an oral or written summary or other information using a variety of comprehension strategies (e.g., generate and respond to questions, draw inferences, compare information from several sources), with literature and content area texts.
